A New Punctuation Mark. Yeah, that's what the world needs...

OK, I use sarcasm at least 3 times a week, and I know people who use it every other sentence. But do we really need a new piece of punctuation just to denote sarcasm?

Probably not. I think it's kinda stupid. Part of the fun of using sarcasm in a text-based forum is to see how many people get it just based on the text. And paying money for a punctuation mark? Anybody remember the Interrobang? No? And that one was free.

The SarcMark would reduce scathing sarcasm to a level just above biting wit. What self-respecting supervillain would dumb down his text by inserting a punctuation mark that by definition dumbs down sarcastic sentences by making them obvious?

Yeah, this is a great idea, As good as surrendering stolen scientific equipment to the nearest superhero(Insert SarcMark Here)

  1. I've proposed an alternative, free of charge and already on your keyboard. The vertical bar and a dash. Like this: "|-"

It has a nice finality to it and unlike its' commercial cousin, doesn't look like an @ that is performing a very athletic solo pose out of the Kama Sutra and enjoying it far too much.

Of course, I'm just a humble supervillain. It takes typographic genius to create a $2 snark and he will stand among Edison and Einstein as a genius|-

  2. Computer King,

One holds the sacred covenent of plausible deniability in all sarcasm. The "That's not how I meant it" clause. If you advertise snark, it loses it's in-joke currency to the In-The-Know.

Ah, Shakespeare probably had the same concerns, considering how flexible the rules of spelling and grammer were employed.

Great posts, keep up the Evil work,
